Gandía becomes Smart Water City and saves 0.5hm3 per year
The objective of the project was to foster water efficiency, optimise resources and offer an excellent service to the population. Idrica, Vodafone and the municipality joined forces in an initiative that includes the deployment of 40,000 smart meters. Vodafone NB-IoT network collects and transmits consumption information, while GoAigua technology converts data into useful services for the citizen.
Challenges of the project
Water consumption monitoring depended on Walk-By and Drive-By methods, so no real-time data was available. As a result, it was not possible to accurately predict water demand or to achieve maximum efficiency in managing work orders and detecting leaks.
In this context, Gandía sought to control water consumption in real time through smart meters, as well as to offer value-added services to citizens by transmitting and analysing the data collected.
The project was also focused on reducing wastewater use and maximizing efficiency in the use of resources for water catchment, treatment and distribution.
Gandía is one of the largest coastal towns in Spain. With a population of over 200,000 during summer, it is a very popular tourist destination around the world.

Thanks to the project, control of customer consumption in real time was achieved through its implementation stages.
- In a first phase, 40,000 smart meters were deployed.
- Afterwards, the implementation of Vodafone NB-IoT connectivity network through Sim cards took place. They were integrated in water meters for data collection and transmission.
- The last phase included the integration of data on GoAigua platform, in order to centralize management. Algorithmic processing allows to establish consumption patterns, predict demand and offer value-added services.
The consultancy service for digital transformation is key part of the project and includes technical training, process training and knowledge transfer to operators.
Benefits and results
The project has fostered sustainable management of resources, with significant savings in water -including wastewater- throughout the cycle, as well as the reduction of energy consumption aimed at water extraction and treatment processes.
In addition, real-time consumption data make possible to proactively manage the network. Thanks to data analysis, demand forecasts enable to achieve: greater accuracy of water to be injected into the network, greater security in the detection of unwanted or accidental consumption, and the reception of alerts for irregular consumption patterns in vulnerable households.
