Challenges of the project
The city of Leon had already invested in a number of water management technologies and systems but had no platform to unify all the data and take advantage of this information. The pilot project, carried out in a specific area of the network, aimed to reduce water losses by 20% and energy costs by 15%.

The Sistema de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de León (SAPAL) is one of the most technologically advanced water utilities in Mexico and is a benchmark in the domestic market.

Solutions Applied
The SAPAL AI pilot was developed to implement the initial stages of Artificial Intelligence in the Mexican utility.
The first phase of the project involved the deployment of several GoAigua solutions: Water Twin for the design of synoptic charts and advanced algorithms in real time based on infrastructure data, GoAigua FlowSens for leak detection and calculation of non-revenue water, and GoAigua Meter Insights for the integration of remote meter reading data. It also included the installation of additional sensors.
During the project, algorithms were developed and made available to SAPAL for the optimization of custom-designed pumping and pressure management programs.
The second phase focused on monitoring and delivering results and demonstrated that the solutions implemented had substantially improved physical efficiency or hydraulic performance, service continuity, energy efficiency and maintenance through a reduction in the number of outages.
Benefits and results
In this pilot, the client was given access to all the functions and developments that the GoAigua platform offers, in line with the project’s objectives to improve operational efficiency.
The algorithm designed for SAPAL added significant value to the proposed solution and yielded excellent results. After the nine-month pilot, water losses had decreased by 54% and energy costs had fallen by 39% at the utility.
