Early flood warning system in Navarre

  • Client: Navarre Regional Government
  • Project location: Navarre, Spain
  • Solutions applied: GoAigua EWS

This project involved the implementation of the GoAigua EWS early warning system for the Navarre Regional Government through the LIFE-IP NAdapta-CC project to improve flood risk management and is currently in the platform support and maintenance phase. Since its deployment, the solution has been helping to reduce response times to flood episodes occurring in the region.

The development phase of the project included the design, implementation and deployment of the platform, with maintenance and support of the solution continuing throughout 2022. The platform enables the client to generate hydro-meteorological alerts in real time via a user-friendly system; to identify floods and their possible effects; and to issue warnings to the relevant agencies.

The benefits sought include improving the ability to predict floods through the integration of real-time meteorological models, the existing sensor network in the basins and hydrological simulations. The solution also enhances knowledge of the basins’ hydrological behavior, thanks to features such as historical data storage and the analysis of the hydrological response to previously recorded events.

Finally, it is important to highlight the value of GoAigua EWS as a tool for improving coordination between the agencies involved in flood management through early risk assessment.

The Navarre Autonomous Region and its catchment basins cover a surface area of 13,803 km2. The system calculates ten-minute rainfall in 2,334 basins, through 3,456 daily grids, reaching 79,632 hydrological simulations every day.
