Integration of remote reading information at Global Omnium

  • Client: Global Omnium
  • Project location: Spain
  • Project timeframe: 2006 – present
  • Solutions applied: GoAigua Meter Insights
The project consisted of integrating the information provided by Global Omnium’s remote metering infrastructure, consisting of around 700,000 smart meters in Spain, into a single platform for their management and operation. The GoAigua Meter Insights solution was developed and implemented to cater for this need and manage these functions based on meter reading data.

The implementation phase focused initially on developing the connectors needed to input the readings from the different meter types into the GoAigua platform. Subsequently, the capacity and reliability of the leak detection algorithms for end users was optimized. Finally, the solution was connected to the rest of Global Omnium’s operating systems.

Integrating different communication technologies and remote reading data structures, from radio to state-of-the-art LPWAN technologies, into a single platform provided the customer with additional services based on consumption data.Ā  This meant the need to arrange visits for visual readings could be eliminated, which significantly reduced the OPEX costs inherent to this process. Moreover, over 2,500 internal leaks began to be reliably detected per month. Comprehensive monitoring of communications performance and meter operations was another major benefit.

Global Omnium, with over 130 years of history, manages the water supply of 400 Spanish towns and cities through a 15,000-kilometre pipe network, reliably serving over three million people. Over a decade ago, the company opted for digital transformation, leading to the creation of Idrica in 2020, with the aim of marketing the GoAigua solution and a range of services for the water sector around the world. Today, Global Omnium operates one of the most advanced AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) networks in the world and continues to successfully integrate remote metering information into the GoAigua platform.
