The first phase of this initiative, led by Idrica, Vodafone and Gandia Town Council, included the deployment of 40,000 smart meters. Vodafone’s NB-IoT connectivity network was then rolled out using SIM cards integrated into the meters to collect and transmit data. This information was subsequently included in the GoAigua platform to centralize management. Algorithmic processing was used to define consumption patterns, predict demand and build value-added services.

This pioneering European project also included an expert consultancy service for digital transformation by providing technical and process training and transferring knowledge to operators.

The benefits obtained include real-time control of customer consumption and sustainable resource management, with water savings of 0.5 hm3 per year across the entire water cycle, including wastewater. Energy consumption in the water extraction and treatment process has also been reduced. Today, the city is still digitally transforming its processes thanks to this project.

Gandia is one of the largest coastal towns in Spain. In summer, it has a population of over 200,000 inhabitants and is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
