Valencia saves more than 4M m3 of water per year
The city of Valencia aimed to tackle the challenge of fixing leaks and reducing fraud in its water network. In this context, the implementation of GoAigua’s technological solution for leak detection, improved infrastructure monitoring and its specialized consultancy service for digital transformation, were decisive in achieving significant water savings in the city. At present, Valencia saves more than 4 million m3 every year compared to previous figures, and has reduced leakage losses by 18%.
Challenges of the project
The initial state of infrastructure monitoring (pipes, pumps…) did not cater for the city’s needs and growing population. The situation was similar in the distribution network’s sectors and sensors.
In addition, Valencia wanted to reduce the amount of fraud and the 40% volume of losses in its network.
About Valencia
Valencia is one of the main cities in Spain (Europe), with a population of almost 800,000 inhabitants. Global Omnium is the utility responsible for water management in the city.
- Sector: Water
- Location: Valencia, Spain
- Technology: GoAigua – Leaks
- Service: Consultancy
Solution applied
The GoAigua technology solution for leaks played a key role in addressing the challenges facing the city of Valencia. The project was implemented by phases.
- First, sensors were added to the network and flow meters and pressure gauges were installed in the DMAs.
- The data received was then integrated into GoAigua’s Big Data & IoT Platform, centralizing management.
- Advanced algorithms were able to detect leaks, fraud and meter tampering in real time and for each sector.
All the improvements were made after using Idrica’s consultancy services, based on technology, processes and on transferring knowledge to operators.
Benefits and results
The implementation of the project has resulted in savings of more than 4 million m3 of water each year through the detection of leaks and fraud.
In addition, the efficiency of the network has increased by 30% compared to the previous situation, reaching total efficiency of 85%.
Moreover, automatic detection of leaks in less than 24 hours has reduced response times and losses due to leaks in the network have fallen by 18%.
The monitoring on a single platform of KPIs on the state and activity of assets (pressure, flow) was also key to the project, in which more efficient management of the distribution network managed to reduce maintenance costs by 20%.
85% network efficiency
-18% leakage losses
-20% maintenance costs
