Advanced analytics used at Air Selangor to implement state-wide monitoring program

Air Selangor partnered with Xylem Vue to develop a long-term, state-wide monitoring program to improve asset reliability and resiliency.

Challenges of the project

Air Selangor previously relied on various techniques to detect leaks and bursts, but response times needed improvement to minimize disruptions. The utility faced long leak detection times, especially in remote areas of its trunk main network. Additionally, pressure transients were a known issue, but their sources and causes remained unclear.

Recurring leaks on the same pipelines raised concerns and affected the utility’s reputation. To address these challenges, Air Selangor sought innovative solutions for continuous monitoring, enabling earlier leak and pressure surge detection, reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), and enhancing customer satisfaction.

Air Selangor is a large water distribution company owned by the Malaysian state of Selangor. The public utility serves a population of 8.4 million residents and manages over 6200 kilometers of trunk mains, ranging from 300mm up to 2200mm, with much of the pipelines located in remote areas of the state.

Solutions applied

The project included the implementation of three modules that are part of Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua Solution: Leak Detection, Leak Localisation and Meter Data Analytics powered with a Business Intelligence (BI) panel.

Six thousand sensors from fourteen suppliers were deployed across Yorkshire Water’s network in and around the Sheffield area, helping to monitor flow, pressure, transients, water quality, acoustics, hydrophones and advanced metering infrastructure. The implementation of a central platform enabled all these events to be managed from a single interface portal, thereby improving the company’s operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Benefits and results

The benefits achieved include:

  • Improved ability to manage non-revenue water
  • Improved process efficiency
  • Improved management metrics
  • Improved planning processes
  • Improved leak detection
  • Enhance reporting capabilities
  • Cost reductions
  • Asset optimization
  • Lower carbon footprint
