The town of Calpe digitizes its drinking water and sanitation systems thanks to the Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua platform

Challenges of the project

Water demand increases dramatically in the municipality of Calpe in the summer period, with over 400% more customers.

The increasing tourism along with the lack of prior planning that considered the evacuation of runoff, has generated  flooding issues and contamination of the Salinas wetland, an emblematic local area of major environmental value.

In addition, it has a large number of reservoirs and pumping stations which are needed to overcome its complicated orography.

Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua drinking water and wastewater solutions have been implemented to help Calpe meet these challenges and optimize water management.

Aguas de Calpe is a joint venture created by the Calpe Town Council and Serhico, S.A. to manage water services in the municipality, including the drinking water supply, the sewage network and wastewater treatment.

  • Location: Calpe, Spain
  • Timeline: 2021 – present
  • Drinking water applications: Meter Data Analytics, Leak Detection, Real-Time What-If Scenarios.
  • Wastewater applications: Clog Monitoring, Sewer Protect, Unified Network Management, Real-Time What-If Scenarios.

Solutions applied

Drinking water

Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua´s Unified Network Management application was implemented in the distribution system to develop the digital twin of Calpe’s network.

Aguas de Calpe effectively monitors the hydraulic operation of its entire network using this technology and can carry out the following tasks:

  • Modify the system operation and simulate the results.
  • Forecast network behavior in the following 24 hours.
  • Generate hypothetical simulation scenarios with real-time information: closing/opening of valves, change of valve configuration, start/stop of pumps, modifications of operating set points, and simulation under different demand conditions.
  • Detect problems immediately or anticipate them.
  • Plan network interventions efficiently.
  • Display system status indicators in a visual and configurable environment.

In addition, Meter Data Analytics, for advanced consumption monitoring, and Leak Detection, for non-visible leaks, have also been implemented.

Wastewater

The implementation of the digital twin in the wastewater network, via the Real-Time What-If Scenarios application, has enabled:

  • The prediction of urban flooding events, finding out the areas affected, flood levels and their evolution over time.
  • Flood detection and prediction.
  • Simulation of what-if rainfall scenarios with real-time information from the network.
  • The creation of a decision support system.

The following solutions have also been implemented: Clog Monitoring, for early clog detection and the automatic generation of advanced cleaning plans; Sewer Protect, to detect infiltrations, rain connections in the wastewater network and illegal discharges; and Unified Network Management, for the independent and smart control of chemical dosing for odor elimination.

In addition, the management and monitoring of pipeline inspections with CCTV cameras has also been digitized.

Benefits and results

Thanks to the implementation of the Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua solutions in the municipality, Calpe has:

  • Reduced non-revenue water by 35% in the last five years.
  • Increased distribution network performance to 89%.
  • Triggered 26 early urban flood risk warnings in one year, optimizing Aguas de Calpe´s human resource management in these episodes.
  • Reduced complaints and improved customer perceptions of the utility.

This project has contributed to Aguas de Calpe becoming the first  European water utility to be certified under the UNE 178101-1 standard for Water Network Management in the Smart Cities environment in April 2019.
