Navarre improves flood predictions

in its river basins

The Navarre Regional Government has improved the management of extreme events in its river basins thanks to the GoAigua EWS early warning system. The solution, which uses real-time meteorological models, generates alerts and issues warnings, thus reducing flood response times.

Challenges of the project

The Navarre Regional Government was looking to improve flood risk management.

The project’s aims included improving the ability to predict these events through the integration of real-time meteorological models, the existing sensor network in the basins and hydrological simulations.

Case study

The Navarre Autonomous Region and its catchment basins cover a surface area of 13,803 km2. The system calculates ten-minute rainfall in 2,334 basins, through 3,456 daily grids, reaching 79,632 hydrological simulations every day.
  • Project location: Spain
  • Project timeframe: 2020 – 2022
  • Solution applied: GoAigua EWS

Solutions applied

The GoAigua EWS early warning system was implemented for the Navarre Regional Government through the LIFE-IP NAdapta-CC project. The solution incorporates and processes measured or simulated hydro-meteorological data in real time to enhance the management of extreme events in river basins, issuing specific warnings and alarms.

The development phase of the project included the design, implementation and deployment of the platform, and maintenance and support of the solution are currently ongoing.

Benefits and results

GoAigua EWS enables the client to generate hydro-meteorological alerts in real time via a user-friendly system; to identify floods and their possible effects; and to issue warnings to the relevant agencies.
Since its deployment, the solution has helped to reduce response times to flood episodes occurring in the region.

It also enhances knowledge of the basins’ hydrological behavior, thanks to features such as historical data storage and the analysis of the hydrological response to previously recorded events.
GoAigua EWS is also a valuable tool for improving coordination between the agencies involved in flood management through early risk assessment.
